“It’s not that easy,” she tells me stepping back.

“Could be,” I retort while studying her eyes. “Give me one date, Sawyer. After dinner with me, you want to walk away for good then we are friends nothing more, nothing less ever again.”

The door to the courtroom opens and I know she has to go. I see the confliction in her face.

“I have an early day because of court. I’ll pick you up at seven at your mom’s house. Dress comfortable.”

She nods and mutters. “God, I hope I don’t regret this.”

Pressing my luck, I lean down to give a quick kiss to her temple before she takes off into the courtroom.

I may have just sealed our fate for a future or I may have just opened to the door to every dream we ever shared coming true.

  Chapter Six

I wish I may, I wish I might, this wish I wish tonight.

  Sawyer

The day is long and I’m distracted. My mom has been healing and getting used to maneuvering with her leg in a cast. Rushing inside the house, I pass her on the couch with a quick hello.

In my bedroom, the damn stars tease me.

I want to rip them all down and throw away all the times Zane and I would lay here and make wishes together. Except, I don’t have time. My ass stupidly agreed to this date.

What the hell do I wear?

My cell phone rings and I swipe to answer it. “Hey chickadee,” Elizabeth greets. “Whatcha doin’?”

“Zane will be here in an hour to take me out so I have to find a way to cancel.”

Elizabeth laughs. “He’s a good guy, Sawyer. One of the best. Give him a chance. He never got over you.”

I sigh. I hurt him so bad. We were so young, can what we once shared be that strong? Then I think of the boyfriend’s I have had since Zane and none of them ever measured up to him.

  “What should I wear?”

  “Jeans and a tight top.”

“I can’t believe you want me to wear jeans. Any other time, you would tell me to dress up.”

She laughs. “Sawyer, Zane doesn’t have a car.”

  “What?”

“He only has his patrol car. When he goes anywhere else, he rides a Harley. So, if he’s pickin’ you up it’s on his bike. You gotta wear jeans, boots, and probably braid your hair.”

  “How does this happen?”

“Well, it’s good on gas. Plus, Conner says there is no better feeling than the open road. They both have them. The way those two talk about those bikes I think they like riding better than sex.”

“Don’t talk about sex and Zane at the same time when I know you slept with him.”

She sighs. “I’m sorry, Sawyer. I told you after the first time I would walk away if you wanted me to. You weren’t here. Yeah, I tried to be you for Zane, but I wasn’t. I tried to hide from love by using Zane, it didn’t work. He’s a great guy, Sawyer. You’re my best friend and deserve the absolute best. Zane is that for you. Take a chance.”

Pulling out a pair of jeans and a scoop neck gray shirt, I toss them on my bed. “You deserve the best too, Elizabeth.”

“I think I found it, too.” She giggles.

  “Hunter?”

“He’s so in charge, strong, and yet gentle with me.”

I smile for her happiness. “Happy for you, Beth,” I tease.

“I like the name. Now, you go get ready for your man! We’ll chat tomorrow.”

Before I can protest she hangs up. I’m happy she’s found her happiness, but what the hell do I do with Zane? Can we really have this second chance?

  **

Riding a motorcycle is thrilling. I got lost in the movements with Zane. Pulling up to Showman’s Steakhouse, I climb off. Zane secures our helmets inside the saddlebags before taking me by the hand, leading us in the restaurant.

We are seated quickly and order. I wait for things to get awkward but they don’t. We share casual conversation through our meal, then Zane goes there over dessert.

  “You home for good?”

“At first, I thought no. But, I like helping Mom. I like my job. I like being home again.”

He sits back in the chair so confident. It’s sexy as hell.

“How many have there been, Sawyer?”

I set my fork down and look at him. “What?”

“Loves, not lovers, but how many have had your heart?

I pick up the wine glass in front of me and sip. “I don’t think this is an appropriate conversation for us to have.”

He leans in resting his elbows on the table. “I think it’s the conversation we need to have. We were young. Too fuckin’ young, Sawyer. We did some dumb shit. We made plans that couldn’t work. But we loved. Job I have, every day is a risk. I put on that uniform, weapon, badge, and it’s knowing today could be the day I take a bullet on a traffic stop. I don’t mince words, I don’t play games, and I don’t have time to beat around the bush. You’re as beautiful today as you were then. You make me feel alive inside, like no one else can. I tried fucking you away. I tried forgetting you. Except you were always with me even when I wanted anything or anyone but you. Consider it fast or consider it just taking a leap for what I want. I want you. I want this. And I want it for as long as I can have it.”

I swallow hard and the cheesecake in front of me suddenly doesn’t look as appealing as his lips.

“Take a chance on me, on us,” he says extending his hand over the table to me.

Laying my hand in his I take a leap. “There is no one who I have loved the way I loved you. There is no one I have dreamed with the way I did you. There is no one I can see myself with other than you, Zane. So, when you ask how many, while I may have had boyfriends and I may have had sex, I have never given myself completely to anyone because while I was running, all this time, I was still right here. I’ve been with you this entire time. When you took my love, you took a piece of me that I can’t get back no matter how hard I try.”

I blow out a breath just as he stands, tossing a hundred dollar bill down on the table to cover our meal and tip. I stand, following him to which he pulls me to him, planting his lips on mine in a kiss like no other I’ve had in my entire life.

The ride to his place is a blur before I find us inside his door with my back pressed to a wall as his mouth devours mine. Hands pull from both of us as we fight to get the other’s clothes off. Stumbling, we move towards his bedroom, where he lays me back and removes my jeans.

  He whistles low.

“Yeah, heard you got a reputation for snatchin’ panties. You should know, I don’t wear any.”

Zane laughs and my heart warms. “Guess the boys win because my panty snatching days are over. This pussy is the only pussy I have craved like my next breath.”

Before I can reply, his mouth is down on my heat, lapping me to the very edge in a rush. My pants are tossed to the floor as he eats me like the best meal he’s had in his entire life.

My belly quivers as my climax builds. With the addition of his fingers working me over, I find my release. Sliding me up the bed, he removes his pants before lying beside me.

“We don’t have to do this, Sawyer.”

The calm in his voice, when I can feel his erection against my leg, reminds me of how gentle he was that first time and every time after. He has always been so caring and understanding with my body and my heart. I tossed us away. I lost this time we could have been building so much more.

  I crave him.

With him beside me, I climb to straddle him, forcing him to his back. He starts to speak, but I bring my finger over his lips to quiet him.

“I want this. I want you, Zane. I want to forget the lost time between us and be in the moment with you. I want to make wishes and plans for the future while I feel you inside me. I want to know what we had isn’t lost and can be so much more.”

Before he can speak, I crash my mouth to his. Rolling my hips, I drag my wet pussy over his hard length. His hands cup my ass as he moans. My spine tingles, my
belly quivers, and my heart overflows feeling like we are home.

This is where Dorothy, from the Wizard of Oz, got it right – there’s no place like home and Zane Collier’s body joined to mine is home.

  Epilogue

She brings me to my knees!

  Zane

  One year later

The box in my pocket feels like it weighs so much. I set the envelope down on the counter making sure to mix it in with all the other mail.

  Now I wait.

Sawyer comes home within minutes and my pulse quickens. We bought the house together last month and her mom is just down the street. The night we got back together, the panty snatcher in me was done. Not just because Sawyer really doesn’t wear panties, but because with her I have everything I have ever wanted in a woman. The box under the bathroom cabinet was burned in a bonfire along with Hunter’s little black book of hookups. The right women changed us; Conner even found himself tied up with a female on the force that moved here after a bad breakup. Things look promising for him, too.

“Hey babe,” she greets, dropping her purse on the kitchen island beside us as she wraps her hands around my neck before pressing her lips to mine.

Pulling away, I keep the distance between our bodies so she doesn’t feel the box.

“How was your day?” I ask as she picks up the mail.

My heart rate picks up as she holds the postcard in her hand. Her eyes look to mine after reading it and I drop to one knee in front of her.

“Save the date. You got so excited for Elizabeth and Hunter’s wedding save the date card, I thought I would ask you to save all your days, dates, and nights for me.” I pull out the box and flip it open to reveal the one carat solitaire. “Marry me?”

With tears falling she nods her head while taking the ring with shaking fingers.

  “I love you, Sawyer.”

“I love you, Zane, more than the stars in the sky.”

  The End

I hope you enjoyed this quick read. In the busy hustle and bustle, I often find it hard to have hours to get lost in a book. I love short stories so I can have my happily ever after in the short time I have. The new year has lots of exciting things to come and I hope you enjoy both the full length novels and novellas to come!

The final book in the Bad Boys of the Road series of short reads is Azzhat coming in December 2018. If you enjoyed this little number don’t forget Mother Trucker which released last year and is available now everywhere!

  Maverick

“He was the high school crush who never knew I existed. I am still the girl hiding against the wall.” Kenzy

Life for Kenzy Davis is far from easy right now. After ending a long term relationship, she is back in her hometown, starting over.

Maverick “Tapper” Collins works hard and plays even harder. An invisible illness shakes his world at its core as his father fights for his life. Everything he ever took for granted stares him in the face, including the shy girl from his past.

Watching someone you love battle an illness is never easy. When the ICU nurse caring for his dad is the one girl from his past he saw around but overlooked, does Maverick find comfort in her embrace? Does Kenzy find a new calm in the chaos of her life? Or do their feelings remain invisible yet again?

  Chapter One

  MaKenzy

  “Come on, Macky.”

I cringe at his pet name. Honestly, I can’t stand his voice, either.

Ignoring the man in front of me, I tape the last box shut then lift it to make my way out of the front door.

  The door that taunts me.

The custom door with our initials cut into stained glass that we spent hours, days actually mulling over. It was the piece to symbolize our beginning, our becoming one. The house means nothing anymore. The promises made, the life that was supposed to be created here—it was all built on lies.

Today, I leave it all behind. The dreams of what could have been are gone and the realities of what will never be are ahead of me.

“You don’t have to do this, Macky.” The whine in his tone only grates on my nerves more. “I’m in counseling now. My therapist says there’s hope for me to live a normal life.”
